“Old school” one might call tradition, yet it is the torch of knowledge whose light shows the way into the future.

For 43-year old Mario Thürkind, who is Vice-Échanson of the Bailliage Saxony-Anhalt, the focus of his work is the future of tradition. When he took over his parents' farm at the turn of the millennium, he laid the foundation for today’s modern winery.

The quaint Vierseitenhof, embedded in the tranquil village of Gröst, has been home to cosy guest rooms as well as the new heart of the estate - the “Vinothek” built in a modern industrial style.

“Tastings of all kinds, events and seminars - we have plenty of options for a wide range of uses.” says Thürkind. The yard sale has also found its new home here.

The winemaker's range of grape varieties extends from the classic Müller-Thurgau and sparkling Riesling to minerally white and charming Pinot Gris, fruity rosés, and red wines matured in barriques from Domina and Zweigelt varietals.

Exotic varieties such as Muscaris and Sauvignon Blanc can also be found on the slopes of the Gröster Steinberg.

“It is important to me that our wines reflect the original Saale / Unstrut character that is typical of the region and that our customers appreciate so much.”

Despite the current situation in his country, Mario Thürkind is optimistic about the future.

“Perhaps also because of COVID-19, wine lovers are thinking more about indulging themselves. That is certainly one of the reasons why we have had even greater demand this year in respect of enjoying wine at home and online tastings.”
