Germany - Weingut Diefenhardt

Bailliage of Germany
Eltville-Martinsthal, August 22, 2022

A special place in the heart of the Rheingau
" Quality, precision and the right mix of tradition and modernity, that's what we stand for "

In the middle of the Rheingau - surrounded by vines on the hillside – is the Weingut Diefenhardt house. Easily visible from afar, it draws everyone's attention. Built in 1891, it served as a hunting lodge for the former owner, Baron von Reichenau. And has always been a central focus for our family. In the summer months we open our bar at the Weinbergshaus. With a glass of wine and small dishes you can then enjoy the phenomenal panoramic view over the Martinsthal vineyards.

Our wines are minerally and delicate, characterized by their finesse and longevity. At the same time, they convey drinkability and joie de vivre.

Quality, precision and the right mix of tradition and modernity, that's what we stand for at Weingut Diefenhardt. We want to produce wines that bring people joy and accompany them on many beautiful occasions and moments in life.

The winery is now run by the fourth and fifth generations of our family. In 1917 Jakob Diefenhardt, our great-great-grandfather, acquired the property in Martinsthal from Baron von Reichenau. After the unexpected death of Jakob Diefenhardt and his only son, Ludwig Diefenhardt, his grandson Hans Herrmann Seyffardt, son of Helena Seyffardt née Diefenhardt, took over the winery in Martinsthal in 1950.

I am the fifth generation of the family to work in the winery today. After completing my studies in viticulture in Geisenheim and experience abroad in South Africa and France, I have been running the family winery in Eltville-Martinsthal together with my father, Peter, since 2014.

Today we manage 18 hectares of vineyards in Martinsthal, Rauenthal and Eltville. In keeping with the tradition of the Rheingau, Riesling is our dominant grape variety with around 85% of the vineyard area, followed by Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) with 15%. However, in the future we would like to expand our repertoire to include Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc).

We own a large part of the Martinsthaler Berglagen Wildsau and Langenberg and characterize very special Riesling types due to their high content of phyllite slate. At the top of the hills, surrounded by these vineyards, stands the striking and lovable vineyard cabin that belongs to the winery and adorns our new label line as a trademark.

In 1999 our winery was included in the VDP, the Association of German Quality Wineries. The VDP eagle logo, which adorns the neck of our wine bottles, means one of the highest wine quality promises in Germany and signals top quality.
