Association Caritative de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs (ACCR)

13 - lucky for many!
" The ACCR currently supports four active projects with a fifth in the planning "

The number 13 is considered an unlucky number in many countries. However, it is a sign of good fortune for the many young people who have benefited from the support provided by the Association Caritative de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs (ACCR), the Chaîne’s non-profit charitable entity now in its 13th year.

The ACCR was established in January 2008 with the objective of giving help and assistance through its project initiatives and charitable aid programmes worldwide. This made possible the launch of programmes in the field of social development aimed at nourishing and improving the living conditions of those in need, especially children. The Chaîne decided to take this active and positive role in the world of food by enlarging its field of interest beyond restaurants and hotels to that of “caring and sharing”.

Thanks to its international connections, the Chaîne can create a direct link thereby avoiding any loss in relation to the allocation of the funds: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.”

The ACCR currently supports three active projects with a fourth in the planning.

Egypt: Cairo
I the Egyptian (Ana El Masry) Foundation gives underprivileged children who were living on the streets an opportunity to learn the basics and develop their skills. It is a chance to discover themselves and be able to adapt to the real world one presented with the opportunity, such as training eventually leading to working in 5-Star hotel for example.

Portugal: Evora
Their Royal Highnesses Prince Charles Philippe d’Orléans and Princess Diana, who live in Évora, decided in conjunction with the Bailliage of Portugal and several local personalities to set up a Horeca School for deprived children in Évora and the wider Alentejo region. Organizing a workshop for the children allowed the institution to offer youngsters from underprivileged families the opportunity to meet other people between finishing school and returning home, in order to promote the acquisition of a basic knowledge in the sector of oenology and gastronomy, and to discover new talent in that field.

Israel: Tel Aviv
The Bailliage of Israel Cooking School was the initiative of Tami Lancut Leibowitz who, upon her appointment as Bailli Délégué in early 2018, was determined to contribute to this humanitarian project as a social responsibility besides the usual management of her Bailliage and organizing Chaine events. Tami and a strong team of professionals spent 18 months preparing the project which the ACCR Committee decided it was worthy of an initial grant and ongoing annual support. In addition to this support, the Tel Aviv Municipality “Department for the Advancement of Children and Youth at Risk” within its Department of Elementary Education has donated the premises of the school free of charge. The project’s aim is to help the unprivileged youngsters with low financial income to have a profession in culinary art, and thereafter assist them to obtain a job at one of the member establishments. The training structure is designed in programmes lasting three months each with 14 students. Tutoring consists of 12 lessons each lasting for four hours every Tuesday. The school is currently running its third training programme.

Turkey: Istanbul (in the planning)
In February 2020 the ACCR signed a cooperation agreement with the International Down Syndrome Federation (IDF) to establish a cooking school in Turkey. Besides providing financial support, the ACCR will also be involved in the management in partnership with the IDF.

The project is aimed at teaching cooking skills to syndrome youngsters aged 18 and over to facilitate them getting a job in the hospitality industry, thereby improving their quality of life by becoming an integral part of society.

Unfortunately, the project had to be put on hold because of the pandemic. Once operational, the cooking studies will be in specially-designed 26 weeks’ long programmes, each hosting 20 students in two classes including theoretical and practical training, as well as external training at kitchens of various establishments. The school will be managed by a full-time professional educator supported by a team of volunteers being well-known Executive Chefs from selected hotels and restaurants in Turkey.
