Celebrating Christmas in fairytale land

As is now an annual tradition, Jules Julien, Bailli Provincial of Alsace, invited us to celebrate the most magnificent Christmas in Alsace, a fairytale land.

On November 24th members of the Chaîne in Alsace and their guests met in the famous Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant, Buerehiesel in Strasbourg, with its traditional 18th century Alsatian farmhouse décor.

On Friday 25th we headed towards the south of Alsace on the wine trail. After exploring Fernand Engel’s organic wine-growing estate in Rorschwihr, focusing on “savoir-faire, style, family history and terroir”, we enjoyed a wine tasting in the panoramic room with views over the Alsatian vineyards.

In the stunning setting of a Michelin-starred gourmet restaurant in Ammerschwihr, Chef Julien Binz prepared a four-course meal for us, elevated by wines chosen by Sommelier François Lhermitte.

The afternoon was dedicated to a tour of the Ribeauvillé factory, learning all about the craft of making luxury fabric.

A convivial and sophisticated dinner was served at L’Éveil des Sens, in the very heart of the Petite France district.

The day’s activities on Saturday 26th were organised with the friendly cooperation of the Bailliage of Baden-Schwarzwald headed by Bailli Gabriele Steyer and Vice-Chancelier/Argentier, Walter Johannes Steyer.

Baden-Baden, with its Christmas market, was the backdrop for an informal meal among friends based on regional ingredients, and an opportunity to meet with winegrowers. The programme included lunch at Theaterkeller, a restaurant located in the wonderful Maison Messmer hotel.

Our time in Alsace came to an end in the former national stud farm built during the reign of Louis XV. The elegant, beautifully decorated table in a stunning contemporary setting and a menu created by Marc Haeberlin epitomized a delightfully simple dinner.
