The Galette des Rois - a large French pastry eaten to celebrate the Epiphany - is a tradition dear to Bailli Délégué Damien Guessennd for its spirit of togetherness and sharing. From now on the Galette des Rois des Rôtisseurs will be used as a celebration by the National Office of the Bailliage of Côte d’Ivoire to:
- convey its best wishes for the New Year to its members/supporters/friends
- announce its calendar of annual activities and events.
The celebration of the Galette des Rois des Rôtisseurs took place in a convivial atmosphere on Friday 6 January 2023, the day of the Epiphany, at the Ivoire Golf Club on boulevard de France in Abidjan. Members, supporters and friends had been invited to share the Galette des Rôtisseurs and “choose the king”.
For this event, the first of its kind, we selected a pastry prepared by the Mövenpick hotel, which lived up to our symbolic desire for a single pastry to share between all the guests. The Mövenpick’s pastry chef gave us a real treat with his 35-slice frangipane confection.
Tasting note: the puff pastry was deliciously crispy and caramelised, and the almond frangipane filling was delectable with its rich taste of sugar and butter in every mouthful.
The “bubbly” selected by our Échanson Daniel Boucheron was Champagne Cédric Guyot Côte de Sézanne ‘Cuvée sincère’ supplied by Arnaud Vergès.
Tasting note: 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, generous and creamy, this vintage brut is a beautiful pale gold colour with delicate bubbles. The aroma is a combination of citrus and mineral notes.
Anecdote of the evening: three of the five “fèves” (figurines hidden in the pastry) were found in slices served by Noël Kouakou, who had been the lucky winner of a bottle of wine worth 1,000,000 CFA francs at the Grand Chapitre Gala in October. I know who I’m going to ask to choose my ticket and my table at the next raffle!
