At Ana's House - a youth shelter
" Our 2023 World Chaîne Day will forever remain in our minds "
To commemorate the 15th Anniversary of ACCR (Association Caritative de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs), volunteer members celebrated this year’s World Chaîne Day at Father Vincenzo's youth shelter, Ana's House. To give the young men encouragement as well as fun, we talked about Western dining culture and served them a homemade, three-course meal. The young men filled their stomachs. We fed our souls.
Father Vincenzo Bordo is a Catholic priest from Piansano, Italy who came to Korea as a missionary in 1990. He is a well-known figure locally, having founded Ana’s house to provide care and shelter for the homeless. From 1993 until today, Ana’s House has offered over three million meals, 20,000 health care interventions, and 700 legal consultations.
MENU
Artisan focaccia bread
Beet gravlax with seasonal salad
Hanger steak cooked sous-vide
mushroom and spinach, crushed potatoes
Apple tart with vanilla ice cream
To our surprise, we were told that while there are about 100,000 homeless people in Korea, there are almost 400,000 children and young people who have run away from home. Most children in youth shelters are not orphans. They come from broken or dysfunctional families. Nevertheless, the young men seemed to be bright, appreciative, and eager to learn. It was an eye-opening, meaningful experience.
Thank you to Roland Hinni, Magnus Scherr, Hyunju Jo (and husband), Andy Kim, Joo Ryung Kim, Milly Kim, and Yeongshim Kim for volunteering for the event.
Our 2023 World Chaîne Day will forever remain in our minds. It may have planted a seed that will encourage our Bailliage to be more active in charity and community service.
Vive la Chaîne!
