A destination for lovers of traditional local cuisine
" One of the best-known restaurants .. where old and somewhat forgotten recipes have been revived "
Baranjska kuća is a family restaurant located in the ethnic village of Karanac in the heart of Baranja, at the foot of the wine-growing Banovo hill.
A village of fewer than a thousand inhabitants, Karanac has become a very popular destination for lovers of traditional local cuisine. With only eight streets, it is home to several restaurants and family farms that provide that unique taste of the Baranja region.
One of the best-known restaurants is Baranjska Kuća where old and somewhat forgotten recipes have been revived. Here, you can find dishes such as snails in nettle sauce and baked acacia flowers, bean goulash in a clay pot, as well as classic Baranja specialities such as fish paprikash, shepherd's stew, carp on a spit, catfish perkelt* with homemade noodles, and many others.
[*Ed. Perkelt is a Croatian version of the Hungarian word pörkölt, which means to roast. Originally a traditional Hungarian dish, perkelt is widespread in eastern Croatia where it’s a simple, quick and tasty meal. The catfish version is a particular favourite.]
Additionally, the tradition has been brought back by building clay bread ovens and creating an ethnographic street of old crafts.
Maître Hôtelier Stanko Škrobo proudly said, “We serve our guests homemade bread with all dishes. It is baked daily in clay bread ovens over an open fire. You can enjoy the gastronomic and wine specialities of Baranja accompanied by the chirping of birds during the day, or the sounds of tambura and violin in the evening.
Besides the two indoor areas where we serve guests in winter, we also have a spacious courtyard that transforms into a terrace in the summer. The restaurant is also adapted for our youngest guests, for whom we have created a playground in the enclosed courtyard.”
Street of Forgotten Time
The street has grown over time to present itself in full glory today. It consists of seven old barns housing pottery, carpentry and weaving workshops, a barber shop, and the “Pod Kruškom” tavern.
There is also a working mill, a blacksmith's house built in the traditional Baranja way (with mud and straw) and an icehouse where ice from the Danube was once stored. Above it, there is a lookout offering a view of the entire village of Karanac, the Baranja mountain, and the beautiful vineyards.
The charm of the Street of Forgotten Time lies in its parallel position to a street that almost 80 years ago was called “Craftsmen Street,” which housed over 30 masters and artisans.
Maître Hôtelier Stanko Škrobo continued, “The goal of the Street of Forgotten Time is to showcase to our guests all the crafts that are either forgotten or becoming forgotten, and to revive them over time. The project was started in 2004 with the idea of becoming a complementary feature to the restaurant, within whose grounds it is located.”
