His connection to the business is rooted in family history, as his father, Fernando Martins, established the chain’s flagship property, the Altis Grand Hotel, in 1973. Located in the heart of Lisbon, the hotel became one of the first five-star establishments in the city, reflecting the evolving landscape of Portugal’s tourism sector during that period.
Under Raul's leadership, Altis Hotels has expanded, transforming into a chain with five locations in Lisbon, and more recently, a new five-star hotel in Porto. The group is known for combining modern design with a focus on service, while maintaining the family values that shaped its early development. For Raul, Altis Hotels are much more than a business - they are a legacy that reflects the commitment to continuing his father's vision.
Raul’s connection to the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs began in 2015, but the relationship between Altis Hotels and the Chaîne dates back to 1994 when the Altis Grand Hotel hosted the revival of the association in Portugal with a Gala Dinner. Since then, Altis Hotels has hosted several of the association’s events. Raul, who holds the grade of Grand Officier Maître Hôtelier, participates in activities that align with his interest in promoting high standards in hospitality. For Raul, the Chaîne represents more than just a network of contacts - it is a platform to promote excellence in gastronomy and the art of hospitality in Portugal and beyond.
Raul is also a strong advocate of the International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition, seeing it as an opportunity to raise the profile of the profession and provide a development platform for young talent in Portugal's restaurant and hospitality sectors. He considers the competition a valuable experience for young sommeliers that allows young Portuguese professionals to interact with colleagues from other countries, share knowledge, and improve their skills.
