A vibrant tribute to global culinary craftsmanship

" The goal of this competition was to celebrate artisanal products that best represent local cultural and culinary identities "

Reflections on my participation in the World Food Gift Challenge 2025 as a member of the International Jury.

The World Food Gift Challenge’s 6th edition took place on May 9th in the sumptuous setting of the Palazzo Biscari in Catania, Sicily. I had the honour of attending this international competition, orchestrated by IGCAT (International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism), as a member of the jury. It was organized this year by Sicily which had recently been awarded the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2025. The event brought together 34 gastronomic and artisanal food gifts from regions around the world renowned for the richness of their culinary heritage.

A competition in service of culture and taste
The goal of this competition was to celebrate artisanal products that best represent local cultural and culinary identities. It highlights unique creations that combine flavour, tradition, sustainability, and creativity. Alongside fellow experts from Andorra, Denmark, Norway, Portugal and the United Kingdom, we evaluated each product based on specific criteria: taste quality, regional relevance, innovation, design, environmental responsibility, and storytelling ability.

After extensive deliberation, the jury awarded three main prizes and nine category-specific distinctions. First prize went to the gift box ‘Ancestral Flavours of Manabí’ (Ecuador), a true sensory immersion into the culinary traditions of the region. Sicilian products also stood out, notably Emanuela Di Maria’s sea urchin, named Best Luxury Product, showcasing the excellence and uniqueness of local craftsmanship.

A moment of recognition and transmission
This experience was far more than just a competition. It was a crossroads of exchange, expertise, and emotion. It brought together producers, institutions, experts, and enthusiasts around a shared mission to preserve and promote the intangible heritage that is local gastronomy. The event was part of the 29th ‘Forum of the Regions of Gastronomy’: a gathering that underscores the importance of international cooperation for a more sustainable and culturally respectful food future.

A perspective close to the heart of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs
As a member of the Chaîne, I found in this event values we deeply share within our brotherhood: excellence, the transmission of know-how, respect for ingredients, and the defence of gastronomic diversity. Being a jury member allowed me to carry that voice, to encourage producers to become ambassadors for their regions, and to remind everyone that behind every product are people, stories, and identities.

I would like to warmly thank IGCAT for their invitation, as well as the region of Sicily for their generous and inspiring hospitality. It was a privilege to take part in this celebration of the world’s culinary cultures.

Long live gastronomy!
