Modern liaison between wine and art
" There to discover are objects using light as an art form, as well as paintings and sculptures by internationally known artists "
Honorary President of the Association of German Wine Exporters; wine and art connoisseur; passionate owner and winemaker of the multi-award-winning Georg Müller Foundation winery in Hattenheim that’s Maître Sommelier Peter Winter!
With the purchase of the winery in 2003 and after extensive investments, Peter Winter made the winery fit for the future. In addition to their oenologist Tim Lilienström, his son Daniel is now on board with responsibility for sales. After completing her master's degree in art history in Great Britain, daughter Katharina studied the international wine business at Geisenheim University. Katharina represents the winery in the areas of marketing and export.
The grape varieties (70% Riesling, 25% Pinot Noir, 5% others including Auxerrois) grow in suitable selected locations. Healthy, rich grapes are produced in harmony with nature and careful care. “In addition to hand selection and consciously reducing yields, we attach great importance to traditional work,” says Peter. “Time spent in this way brings the best improvement in quality.”
Whilst Riesling and Pinot Noir based wines are the core products, Auxerrois is a favoured speciality. It is aged in barriques in the style of Burgundy white wines. Peter enthused, “I can recommend the 2022 Auxerrois dry VDP.Gutswein to everyone who doesn’t know our winery yet. In the glass, the wine presents itself in a radiant golden yellow with aromas reminiscent of ripe apricot, young pineapple, ripe pomelo and subtle vanilla. On the palate, the wine is creamy and delicate.”
When asked what is exceptional about his winery, Peter Winter doesn't have to think twice. “We are passionate about cultivating a liaison between wine and art.” It is with much pride that Peter the art lover and his wife Elvira, who ran the well-known Rother Winter Gallery in Wiesbaden for many years, look at an impressive exhibition of modern exhibits in the 250-year-old 1,400 m² historic vaulted cellar. There to discover are objects using light as an art form, as well as paintings and sculptures by internationally known artists. “This has a museum quality and increases the attractiveness of the winery,” says Peter happily.
Anyone who has retained their sense of atmosphere will immerse themselves in the world of light as soon as they walk down the stairs: “light” art is an inviting eye-catcher and skilfully coordinates with the enjoyment of the Weingut Georg Müller Stiftung fine wines.
