Dear friends, fellow members of the Chaîne

The National Bailliage will be delighted to welcome you to participate in this Grand Chapitre at the beginning of September. Originally it was scheduled for April but it will come as no surprise to everyone that ongoing pandemic restrictions have caused us to rethink the dates.

Merano or Meran (NB. both the Italian “Merano” and the German “Meran” names for the city are used in English) is a city in South Tyrol, northern Italy.

Best known for its spa resorts it is located within a basin at the entrance to the Passeier Valley and the Vinschgau, surrounded by mountains reaching over 3,000 metres (c10,000 feet) above sea level.

In the past, the city has been a popular place of residence for several scientists, literary people, and artists, including Franz Kafka, Ezra Pound, Paul Lazarsfeld, and also Empress Elisabeth of Austria (nicknamed Sisi), who all appreciated its mild climate.
