Maître Restaurateur Jimmy Loh, formally Loh Chee Hau, is a Malaysian-Chinese hospitality professional. He has charted an impressive journey from Penang, Malaysia to leadership in China’s dynamic culinary industry. With roots in a food-loving family, Jimmy’s passion for hospitality began in high school and was solidified during an internship at Shangri-La Penang.
Jimmy’s early exposure to hospitality, aged 18, culminated in organizing a Christmas Gala Dinner for the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, igniting his career path. [Ed. Sadly no photos exist from this event.]
His first significant role however was at Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, progressing from Supervisor to Assistant Manager. His academic pursuit at Johnson & Wales University, followed by a Master’s degree from Cornell University and an MBA from ESSEC Business School, Paris, France, equipped him with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in hospitality.
A key turning point in Jimmy’s career was the mentorship of Jacques Rougié, a leading figure in French gastronomy. Rougié’s guidance provided Jimmy with deep insights into French culinary arts and a robust professional network. This mentorship, combined with Jimmy’s determination, helped him navigate the complexities of introducing and maintaining authentic French cuisine into the Chinese market.
Managing a business in China’s diverse and evolving market poses unique challenges, particularly in balancing cultural adaptation with brand authenticity. Jimmy emphasizes the importance of preserving the essence of French gastronomy whilst catering to local tastes. A delicate balance achieved through strategic foresight and innovation.
Since joining Groupe FLO Asia, Jimmy has been instrumental in promoting French ‘art de vivre’ and ‘joie de vivre’ through a diverse range of gastronomic offerings. He has transformed the company from a single restaurant into a portfolio of establishments. Each celebrates French culture and heritage. Jimmy’s efforts have not only enriched the culinary landscape but also strengthened the company’s presence in China.
Jimmy’s long-standing involvement with the Chaîne, spanning 18 years, underscores his dedication to culinary excellence. As a Maître Restaurateur and OMGD (Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs) member, he values the association’s sense of family and shared passion for food. He sees immense potential in leveraging the Chaîne’s global community to create unforgettable culinary experiences and strengthen international bonds.
In response to the question: “Are you aware of Chaȋne des Rôtisseurs’ global community and are you planning to make use of this global family?”, Jimmy replied, “Yes, I am familiar with the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs’ worldwide community. I envision hosting events in Beijing that would not only cater to our local members but also provide an opportunity for members from abroad to participate. By bringing everyone together over a shared love for food and culinary excellence, we can create unforgettable experiences and strengthen the bonds within our community.
He continued, “We must wholeheartedly commit to nurturing our members' growth with the same fervour that the Chaîne ignited within me, motivating me to be a better entrepreneur. Together, let's amplify our connections and infuse others with our shared passion, creating a vibrant, supportive community that empowers and inspires, just as the Chaîne has done for me since my early beginnings in the hospitality industry.
