The Bailliage of Portugal put together a supporting programme for the 2024 International Final of the Jeunes Sommeliers Competition.

An interesting and ambitious series of events fully incorporated the values not only of the Jeunes Sommeliers Competition and but also those of the wider Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

Over four days the competitors, jury, committee and supporters experienced the best of Portuguese hospitality and the richness of the country’s tradition, gastronomy and oenology.

Having arrived from near and far during the day on Wednesday 16th, there was a relaxed dinner at Via Graça for the competitors, jury, committee. With its warm ambiance and panoramic views of Lisbon’s skyline, the restaurant provided the first of what would be several unique and unforgettable dining experiences.

Thursday 17th saw an early start for the group who enjoyed an educational tour of the Lisboa wine region. The region features more DOCs (Denominação de Origem Controlada) than any other in Portugal, including regions famous for both wine and aguardente (brandy). Despite the rise of private wine estates, many small-scale producers still deliver their grapes to large cooperatives, contributing to a wide array of wines from everyday table wines to exceptional Vinho Regional Lisboa.

First stop was at Quinta do Gradil, a historic estate and renowned winery. Surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, it offers visitors a delightful blend of winemaking tradition and scenic beauty. Established in the 18th century, Quinta do Gradil produces a diverse range of wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Lisboa region.

Next stop was at Quinta da Almiara, a charming estate known for its dedication to producing high-quality wines and offering a serene retreat for visitors. This family-owned vineyard combines modern winemaking techniques with respect for traditional practices, resulting in wines that reflect the region’s terroir and expertise.

Lunch was taken at Zé Varunca, a beloved culinary gem renowned for its authentic Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant exuded charm with its traditional decor and attentive service.

The tour concluded with a visit to the prestigious Marquês de Pombal Palace Winery renowned for its historic significance and dedication to winemaking excellence. Situated amidst lush vineyards and historic architecture, the winery pays homage to the legacy of the Marquês de Pombal, a key figure in Portugal’s wine industry. The estate produces a diverse range of wines, blending traditional methods with modern innovation to create distinctive flavours that reflect the region’s terroir.

Dinner was enjoyed back at the Altis Grand Hotel. The luxurious five-star hotel is a distinguished landmark situated in the vibrant heart of Lisbon.

After the Semi-Final on Friday, October 18th, competitors and guests enjoyed a contemporary menu at Chef Vítor Adão’s “Plano”. Meanwhile, the Committee and Judges dined at Sála, a sophisticated culinary destination where Chef/Owner João Sá is celebrated for his contemporary Portuguese cuisine.

Concluding the programme, on Saturday 19th after the Awards Presentation and the Induction Ceremony, was a Gala Dinner in the Altis Grand. A sumptuous menu was served to perfection by the well-drilled front of house team.

Sunday came and we all headed for home, sorry that such a wonderful time in Lisbon was over but very satisfied with the successful outcome.
