Our first Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) event was a celebration of sake. It was held at Sheng Sushi Restaurant with 18 enthusiastic members and guests from Shenyang, Beijing and Shanghai.

To learn about and celebrate Japan’s loved national beverage, was the perfect opportunity to introduce an OMGD event to our Bailliage.

Just like wine made from grapes, sake is diverse with a great wealth of history and knowledge to explore.

Six different sakes from Japan were featured. Complemented by Chef Sheng’s delicious and delicate Japanese cuisine. Knight Hu, EMW Greater China Sake Brand Ambassador and certified Sake Sommelier, guided us through the selection of sakes.

The evening commenced on the terrace for the pre-dinner cocktail with Gekkeikan “Chatty Whale fresh fruity sake” served as sakejito or neat, paired with crispy fried chicken, edamame and sesame spinach.

Moving inside for the main event, we began with Rikyubai “Shizuka” Junmai Ginjo, paired with avocado and soft-shell crab tempura salad.

Takashimizu Junmai Daiginjo followed complemented by selected air-flown sashimi and sushi. Then served in harmony with grilled cod was Mutsu-Hassen Tokubetsu Junmai.

Next was the full-flavoured Sakuramasamune “Shumare” Honjozu, served warm, which accented the beautiful homemade Wagyu beef gyoza (dumplings) and teppan shiitake mushrooms.

Finally, we completed our journey with Yonetsuru “Andante” Junmai and a delicate sweet tofu with raspberries.

As the evening drew to a close, a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Chef Sheng to thank him and his team for their fabulous preparation and presentation of a menu that complemented the great selection of sake. All was delivered with warm service by the front of house staff.
