Portugal World Chaîne Day

Bailliage of Algarve, Portugal
Foia (near Caldas de Monchique), April 24, 2022

Ecologically green event around a food truck
" With menus printed in green; green olives and green tapenade among the starters the picnic was coloured green from the start "

Along with the Chaîne global fraternity our Bailliage celebrated World Chaîne Day albeit on Sunday rather than the Saturday.

In view of the theme “Green in its all forms”, what could be a greener way to celebrate than a picnic/barbecue at the highest place in the Algarve?

Members and their guests journeyed up through the Serra de Monchique ecological nature reserve past the famous old spa town of Caldas de Monchique, famous for its natural spring water, to Foia. The highest point in Foia is some 902 meters above sea level.

Awaiting us was the food truck “Alecrim”. Panoramic views over the whole of the Algarve enhanced a delightful green picnic theme setting. Owner Marie-Anne, Chancelier Provincial of South of Tagus, had arranged a feast of local delicacies. An informal lunch took place in the table area in front of the food truck which just happened to be painted in green in keeping with the theme.

Tables were laid with bamboo cutlery and plates, recyclable decorations and food served in durable containers. All followed the ecologically green concept. With menus printed in green; green olives and green tapenade among the starters the picnic was coloured green from the start.

Further choices to encourage the appetite included fresh goat cheese with oregano, local sausage and Monchique ham, savoury pies, chicken croquettes and cheese balls. Individual table baskets held bread, water and bottles of Al-Mudd Negra Mole rosé wine.

Al-Mudd Negra Mole is produced locally. Light and dry with hints of pear and citrus and nuances of nutmeg, it combined beautifully with the main course. Chicken rosemary and pork skewers were accompanied by rice, beans and broad beans cooked Monchique-style and served with roasted sweet potatoes and watercress sauce.

Final treats of a delicious green cake and small marzipan bites brought the meal to a close. Coffee and the special ‘aguardente’ (traditional fruit brandy) of the area followed. The famous Medronho from Monchique is distilled from fruits of the arbutus bush, the strawberry bush, aptly an ever-green shrub which grows in abundance in this area.

Everyone was delighted that Bailli Délégué Paulo Amado was able to be present at this informal lunch picnic/barbecue celebrating World Chaîne Day.
