George Cohen’s illustrious hotelier career spans over 50 years and multiple countries. This has earned him the well-deserved title of a South African hospitality industry legend.

In May 1973, George officially embarked on his hotel career as part of the team at Southern Sun Hotels. Eager to broaden his international experience, he moved to England in 1975, enrolling at the prestigious Westminster College Hotel School in London. With determination and dedication, George worked his way up through various positions at prominent United Kingdom hotels.

In 1992, a serendipitous encounter with Albertina Sisulu, a prominent anti-apartheid activist, and wife of Walter Sisulu, inspired him to return to South Africa - which happened in 1993.

George has earned a reputation for his dedication, hard work and passion for the hospitality profession. He is highly regarded for his exceptional ability to turn around financially challenged hotels, transforming them into beacons of excellence and world-class service. And his adeptness at running hotels in diverse environments is continuously showcased.

At the helm of the prestigious Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa where George has been leading the team for 17 years, he has demonstrated an ardent commitment to guest satisfaction whilst nurturing a devoted staff. His hands-on approach to building relationships and developing young talent has led to the highest standards of administration and general management.

His visionary approach and ability to inspire have propelled the hotel to unparalleled success, creating a culture of excellence that resonates with guests and staff alike. His collaborative efforts with the culinary team have elevated the dining experience at the hotel, captivating the palates of discerning guests. A self-proclaimed philanthropist, George mentors and guides young people, especially those interested in the hospitality industry. He has nurtured the careers of several aspiring hoteliers. He believes in providing opportunities for young interns to flourish and pursue new opportunities worldwide. George's exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence have been recognized through prestigious awards. Having joined the Chaîne in 2009 George is now a Grand Officier Maître Hôtelier, thus the Chaîne acknowledges George’s dedication to culinary innovation as an industry leader.
