Finland Culinary Journey

Turku Archipelago, June 6, 2026

Inspired by the experience

" A stunning network of 20,000+ islands, connected by winding roads and ferries, create the setting for a food culture that is both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly innovative "

The Turku Archipelago, one of Northern Europe’s most captivating coastal regions, is far more than a scenic destination. In southwestern Finland it’s a place where nature, culture, and gastronomy come together in a uniquely inspiring way. A stunning network of 20,000+ islands, connected by winding roads and ferries, create the setting for a food culture that is both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly innovative. Most famous for the Archipelago Trail, a 250-km route that lets you hop between islands by car, bicycle, and local ferry.

This distinctive culinary landscape is brought to life by passionate local entrepreneurs. Amongst them is Haapman Estate in Nauvo, run by Tuomas and Annika Haapman. As Finland’s first commercial winery, the estate has introduced an entirely new layer to archipelago gastronomy.

Here, visitors can enjoy wines produced from locally grown grapes while experiencing art exhibitions and live performances. An example of how food, culture, and creativity naturally intertwine in the region.

Another remarkable destination is Hotel Nestor and the Back Pocket restaurant in Korppoo, operated by William and Sandra Hellgren. Known for its refined yet approachable dining, Back Pocket celebrates seasonal, locally sourced ingredients with modern Nordic flair. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted, and expertly paired wines raise the menu into a holistic culinary experience.

These destinations are complemented by a network of smaller producers. Fishers, farmers, bakers, and artisans who bring the archipelago’s flavours to life. Traditional archipelago bread, freshly caught fish such as perch and salmon, wild berries, and handmade products reflect both the purity of the environment and the richness of local heritage.

A perfect example of how all these elements come together was the summer excursion organized by the Bailliage of Turku on Saturday, June 6th. Our journey to Nauvo and Korppoo captured the very essence of the archipelago’s appeal.

The excursion began in Nauvo at Haapman Estate, where participants were fortunate to experience the opening day of a summer art exhibition. The presence of the exhibiting artists and live music performances created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Guests enjoyed wines made from locally grown grapes by Tuomas Haapman, paired with tapas, and finished with the estate’s renowned ice cream. The visit highlighted how seamlessly gastronomy, art, and hospitality merge in the archipelago.

From Nauvo, the group continued by ferry to Korppoo, embracing one of the defining features of the region: the journey itself. The final destination was Hotel Nestor and the Back Pocket restaurant, where the day culminated in an exceptional dining experience.

The carefully composed menu delighted all the senses, whilst wine pairings selected by Axel Sundström perfectly complemented each course. The evening demonstrated how the archipelago can transform a meal into a memorable event. One that lingers long after the last bite.

Experiences like this reveal why the Turku Archipelago is increasingly attracting attention from international visitors. The region offers pure, high-quality ingredients sourced from the surrounding sea, forests, and farms. It provides authentic encounters with local entrepreneurs who are deeply connected to their environment. It blends traditional flavours with contemporary Nordic gastronomy, creating a dynamic and evolving food scene.

Equally important is the setting itself. Dining here means enjoying meals in serene island landscapes, often reached via scenic ferry routes that become part of the experience.

Sustainability, seasonality, and craftsmanship are not trends. They are inherent values that shape every aspect of the region’s food culture.

In essence, the Turku Archipelago is more than a destination. It is a feeling. The warmth of hospitality, freshness of sea air, and the creativity of people who are inspired by their surroundings.

Whether visiting for a single day or a longer stay, it offers a rare combination of beauty and taste that invites travellers from around the world to discover, experience, and return.
