Piedmont wines in focus
" Before the formal wine tasting, we tried a Contratto Extra Brut 2010 served from magnums "

Maître Rôtisseur Christoph Enengl invited members and their guests to an Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Dégustateurs (OMGD) dinner on the subject of “Piedmont”.

Italy’s Piedmont wine region is best known for the Nebbiolo grape variety, from which the wines Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero are produced. But Barbera and the white varieties Cortese di Gavi, Arneis and the dessert wine Moscato d'Asti also contribute to the fame. The Piedmont region between the foothills of the Alps and the Apennines is undisputedly one of the largest wine-growing areas in the world.

Before the formal wine tasting, we tried a Contratto Extra Brut 2010 served from magnums as an apéritif.

Wines tasted were:
- Dolcetto - Elio Altare 2017
- Barbera Superiore Bionzo - La Spinetta 2007
- Larigi - Elio Altare 2000 (Barbera)
- La Villa - Elio Altare 2006 (60% Nebbiolo, 40% Barbera)
- Barolo Cerretta - Elio Altare 2005
- Barolo Le Vigne - Luciano Sandrone 2001
- Barolo Campé - La Spinetta 2004
- Barolo Riserva 7 anni Pianpolvere Soprano Bussia - Rocche dei Manzoni 2001
- Tokaj 1993 - Disznókö (from Hungary)
- Grappa from the cult distiller Romano Levi in Neive (Piedmont)

Of course, an equally delicious menu was served with the excellent wines which began with a greeting from the kitchen, consisting of venison ham on lamb’s lettuce. The Chef’s special vitello tonnato was pure poetry. The tagliatelle al tartufo with a sous-vide cooked pheasant breast was superbly tasty.

The main course was sublime braised beef shoulder with porcini mushroom risotto, Barbera sauce and vegetables. However, a highlight of the evening was the semifreddo with hazelnut nougat dumplings and berries.

A thoroughly successful evening was rounded off perfectly with the appreciation given to Maître Rôtisseur Christoph Enengl and his team for the excellent food and to Ralph Wiplinger for the outstanding wine presentation.

Vive la Châine!
