Chinese New Year Banquet celebrating the Year of the Monkey

We gathered at the King Palace Chinese BBQ to celebrate Chinese New Year with a BYOB ten-course “Year of the Monkey” dinner.

The eatery is located in the Chinatown area of North Miami. Upon entering hanging roasted ducks and an oversized gurgling fish tank teeming with the latest offerings greeted us.

During the champagne reception an awesome lion dance performance entertained us. As is customary, the three lions offered us red envelopes with hopes of gleaming lucky dollars.

Settling into our seats we found tables adorned with commemoratives of decorative Chinese chopsticks, colourful lace fans and a variety of scented soaps. Stuffed monkeys were hanging on the chairs everywhere. Most attendees arrived in Chinese attire lending an added air of excitement to the evening.

Under the watchful eye of the laughing Buddha, family-style platters were presented for the auspices of friendship, prosperity, love, good luck, truth, blessings, happiness, peace, good health, longevity and sweet dreams.  Desserts were paired with a delicious Lychee dessert wine, compliments of the Bailliage.

As in all Greater Miami events, Bailli Nancy Radlauer held a “Chefs of the Future” scholarship raffle to benefit Johnson & Wales University culinary students.

She continued by acknowledging the King Palace’s owner Mei Wu for an outstanding evening.

After the feast, guests relaxed to enjoy conversation and desserts to reflect on a sweet New Year ahead.
