An exclusive Private Members Club

" The Oriental Club treasures its rich history and the extraordinary characters who have been associated with it "

For 200 years, The Oriental Club has been an iconic central London focal point for those who have lived, worked or travelled in the East. Today, a diverse membership values the modern amenities of Stratford House and the attentive service offered by the Club’s staff.

Tucked away at the end of Stratford Place close to Bond Street and within easy reach of Canary Wharf and the City, The Oriental Club is an exclusive members-only haven. The Club is ideally placed for meeting friends, family and colleagues for business, an evening out, or simply time-out from a busy day. The Club has 40 well-appointed bedrooms, an elegant dining room with renowned cuisine, two bars, a secluded courtyard terrace and Shamiana [Ed: a South Asian ceremonial tent, shelter or awning, commonly used for outdoor parties, weddings, feasts etc] meeting rooms, an IT suite, spacious drawing rooms, a billiards room and private dining rooms for hosting events and parties.

The Oriental Club treasures its rich history and the extraordinary characters who have been associated with it since the Duke of Wellington founded the Club as the first and only President in 1824.

In 1861, Richard Terry, the Club’s then Chef de Cuisine, published the first western cookery book for eastern cuisine, entitled “Indian Cookery”. These eastern flavours are still found in many recipes today. The Club’s kitchen brigade creates curries, alongside a range of British seasonal dishes using ingredients sourced mainly from UK suppliers.

Club members come first and are encouraged, as custodians, to nurture the Club for future generations, whilst embracing continuing innovation. It offers a vibrant social scene, excellent business facilities and a forward-thinking approach to Club life.

About Maître Hôtelier Matthew Rivett
Matthew Rivett is the Secretary and CEO of The Oriental Club. During his 30+ years in professional hospitality, Matthew has previously held senior positions at The Ritz London and the St John Restaurant company. Matthew joined The Oriental Club team in 2012 with the objective of reversing a number of legacy issues and revitalising the hospitality and commercial proposition in readiness for the Club’s Bicentenary in 2024. As a result, the Club has been successfully repositioned as a premium, traditional Club which is innovative, user-friendly and above all hospitable. It is considered by its members and supporters to be “a little bit different”.

Besides the Chaîne Matthew belongs to a number of associations including the Distinguished Clubs of the World; Club Secretaries and Managers Association; Association of London Clubs; Registered Clubs Association (Committee member); Livery Companies’ Mutual (Board member); Worshipful Company of Cooks (Liveryman); Freeman of the City of London; Reunion des Gastronomes; Confrérie du Sabre d’Or de Grande-Bretagne (Chevalier); Matthew is also on the Clubs Panel for UK Hospitality.

Regarding the Chaîne, Matthew said, “I enjoy the conviviality of the Chaîne and the opportunity to meet and host fellow members and guests, often in an exclusive or even unique fashion. It is usually true that those in attendance share a compatible appreciation of hospitality and gastronomy, which usually enhances the enjoyment of everyone beyond the ‘sum of its parts’.”
