Winemaking tradition spanning the generations

" a family-run estate with a winemaking tradition spanning four generations "

Vinarija Gerštmajer (English: the Gerštmajer Winery) in the Baranja region of Croatia, is a family-run estate with a winemaking tradition spanning four generations.

The cellar dates back to 1854! The family’s legacy began with Mihalj Gerštmajer who is now 92 years old. His son, the current owner, Mihalj Gerštmajer took over the family business and expanded the vineyards to 11 hectares of arable land. Gradually he is handing over the reins to his son, Professionnel du Vin Ivan Gerštmajer Zelember, as the next generation winemaker.

These vineyards are situated in historically significant areas where vines were cultivated as far back as Roman times, adding to the quality and distinction of their wines. The estate’s portfolio is dominated by white varieties, including Graševina, Chardonnay, Traminac, Pinot Gris, and Riesling, while red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch are also cultivated.

The estate is especially renowned for producing wines with higher residual sugar content, offering semi-dry, semi-sweet and dessert wines. Their Graševina from a late harvest has earned the title of “Danube Champion,” being recognised as the best-rated dessert wine.

The Gerštmajer family is dedicated to preserving traditional practices while incorporating modern technologies into their winemaking processes. Mihalj's son, Ivan Gerštmajer Zelember, represents the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. As a qualified agronomist, Ivan is actively involved in modernising the winery by introducing new technologies and equipment. He also aims to expand the vineyard’s range, focusing on Riesling, which he identifies as having excellent potential in the Baranja region.

Ivan’s efforts have been acknowledged on a national level. In 2021, he won third place in the competition for Croatia's best young farmer, a testament to his dedication and vision in managing the family estate.

In addition to wine production, Vinarija Gerštmajer offers visitors a tasting experience in its tasting room, which accommodates about 20 people, or under a summer canopy with a capacity of up to 50 guests. Visitors can enjoy premium wines paired with traditional Baranja dishes, creating a truly memorable experience.

Vinarija Gerštmajer represents a perfect blend of age-old tradition and modern innovation, with an unwavering focus on quality and authenticity. Their commitment to winemaking, coupled with continuous investment in development and education, secures their place among the most recognised wineries in the region.
