At the recent International Annual General Meeting of the Chaîne, Bailli Délégué Shabnam Nayer, who is a Member of the Conseil Magistral, reported on the handover of a gelato machine by the ACCR (Association Caritative de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs) to the Alice for Children Italian Food Academy Nairobi. In making the presentation, Shabnam was supported by Petra Zanghi, Pair de la Chaîne, who had been very much involved in the project - in particular liaising with the Italian sponsors.

It was a proud moment for the ACCR to hand over the machine to the Food Academy - which is located in the slums of Nairobi - to further their existing curriculum.

Orphans and children from single parent families are given refuge at the Alice for Children project which was started 20 years ago by philanthropist Diego Masi.

Babies are looked after whilst mothers go scavenging in the infamous Dandora dumpsite for less than a dollar a day. The children progress to primary and secondary schools until they are placed into vocational training.

The Italian Food Academy offers certified courses in Italian cooking and once the students finish the course, they are employed at various establishments.

Given the growing market for ice-cream in Nairobi, the gelato machine will greatly extend the curriculum further enhancing the cooking experience for the students and their opportunities for employment.
